Phone Recycling Management Solutions – committed due-diligence with Secured By Design

MobiCode, who provide phone recycling management solutions for the pre-owned mobile phone industry, have renewed their membership with Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.

MobiCode was founded in 2011 by mobile industry professionals with the aim of developing products to “simplify and lower the costs and risks of recycling mobile devices and increasing the sale of refurbished devices”, thus benefiting the planet and reducing the cost of mobile phone ownership.

MobiCode’s MobiCHECK range of products has been accredited by SBD, having achieved Police Preferred Specification.

MobiCHECK is a solution that allows a user to check whether a mobile phone is lost or stolen before electing to buy or sell it. It checks the history and status of a device by matching the Serial / MEID / ESN or IMEI number live against the company’s extensive database, which includes unique datasets from mobile phone networks, insurance companies, law enforcement agencies, and other recyclers and retailers worldwide. This verifies the actual make and model of the phone and its current status.

The MobiCHECK service is provided free to the police as part of MobiCode’s commitment to due-diligence and reducing mobile phone fraud.

SBD is part of Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI), a police owned organisation that works on behalf of the police service to deliver a wide range of crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives across the UK. PCPI is a not-for-profit organisation and board members include senior police officers from each of the four home nations who control and direct the work PCPI carries out on behalf of the police service.

SBD plays a significant crime prevention role in the planning process to design out crime in a wide range of building sectors. It has achieved some significant success including one million homes built to SBD standards with reductions in crime of up to 87%.

SBD have many partner organisations, ranging from the Home Office, Ministry of Housing, communities & local government and the police service through to local authorities, housing associations, developers and manufacturers. SBD work closely with standards and certification bodies to ensure that their publicly available standards actually meet the needs of the police and public alike.

Products must be subjected to vigorous testing and auditing by an accredited third party organisation before being allowed to carry the SBD logo – this is the only way for companies to obtain police accreditation for security related products in the UK.
