MobiCode, which provides phone recycling management solutions for the pre-owned mobile phone industry, has renewed its membership with Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.
MobiCode launched in 2011. Mobile industry professionals founded the business to develop products that simplify mobile device recycling and reduce the costs and risks involved. In addition, the business set out to support refurbished device sales, lower the cost of phone ownership and benefit the environment.
MobiCode’s MobiCHECK range of products has received SBD accreditation and achieved Police Preferred Specification.
MobiCHECK lets users check whether a mobile phone has been reported lost or stolen before they choose to buy or sell it. It checks the history and status of a device by matching the Serial, MEID, ESN or IMEI number live against the company’s database.
That database includes datasets from mobile phone networks, insurance companies, law enforcement agencies, and recyclers and retailers around the world. As a result, the service helps verify the make and model of the phone and confirm its current status.
MobiCode provides the MobiCHECK service free to the police. Therefore, the service forms part of its wider commitment to due diligence and reducing mobile phone fraud.

SBD forms part of Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI), a police-owned organisation that works on behalf of the police service to deliver crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives across the UK. PCPI is a not-for-profit organisation. In addition, its board includes senior police officers from each of the four home nations who direct its work on behalf of the police service.
SBD also plays an important crime prevention role in the planning process by helping to design out crime across a wide range of building sectors. It has reported significant success, including one million homes built to SBD standards with reductions in crime of up to 87%.
SBD also works with many partner organisations. These include the Home Office, the Ministry of Housing, communities and local government, the police service, local authorities, housing associations, developers and manufacturers. Furthermore, it works closely with standards and certification bodies to ensure that publicly available standards meet the needs of both the police and the public.
Before a company can carry the SBD logo, an accredited third-party organisation must test and audit its products rigorously. This is the route companies use to obtain police accreditation for security-related products in the UK.
